Lead Theatre Practitioner – Anaesthetics
Location: Central London
Salary: Up to £60,000 (dependent on experience)

Introduction:
Are you an experienced Lead Theatre Practitioner (Anaesthetics) with Orthopaedics experience and looking for a new opportunity to work in a prestigious private clinic in the heart of Central London? We are currently seeking a dedicated and highly skilled individual to join a dynamic surgical team, offering the chance to work in a state-of-the-art operating theatre and with some of the best surgeons within the UK. Duties:
The post-holder is responsible and accountable for:
- the management of the anaesthetic department and theatre portering service.
- assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating high quality pre, peri and post operative care, resource management and ensuring the department meets CQC standards.
- managing and ensuring the provision of nursing care, maintaining high clinical standards, and be able to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
- exercising accountability as set out in the NMC/ HCPC Code of Professional Conduct
MANAGERIAL
- To manage and lead the Anaesthetic service on a continual basis, manage theatre porters, to support to the Ward Managers, Theatre Suite and Enhanced Care Unit
- To provide leadership, management, supervision and support to the team
- To assist in the planning and the delivery of individualised, safe, effective and evidence based patient care
- To ensure the provision of a welcoming, caring and safe environment for patients
- Maintaining equipment asset register and ensuring maintenance, therefore.
- Contribute to the effective budget management of the departmental clinical area
- Identifying safe staffing levels and adjusting staffing levels to avoid under or over staffing
- To assist the Head of Theatres and/or Deputy Head of Theatres in the business planning process
- Stock checks/supplies ordering are carried out daily/ weekly/ monthly as agreed
- Organise own work and that of others, give direction to all members in theatre
- Orientate new staff, including bank and agency, to the department. This includes the use of electronic systems for patient management and stock capture.
- Makes adjustments to cover emergencies and staff sickness to maximise efficiency
- Report the failure or mechanical problems of any items in line with Hospital Policy and arrange for repair or replacement of it in consultation with manager
- Participate in annual appraisals, 6 monthly catch-up meetings related to appraisals and delivering objectives that have arisen due to appraisals or through service improvement projects
- Perform one-to-ones within the team, identify issues or risk areas via the appropriate escalation path
- To ensure a culture of safety and responsiveness, investigate all incidents and complaints, share lessons learnt and action plans
- To be member of Resuscitation Committee and link practitioner
- To participate in presenting and delivering teaching sessions for the clinical staff
- Allocate university students within theatre rotation, include student induction, sign off, etc
- To undertake mentoring of staff and performance review appraisals
- To participate in the recruitment and retention of staff
- To ensure completion and compliance in the clinical audit program
- Supporting, supervising and delegating clinical tasks and where appropriate administration tasks to the anaesthetic team
- To undertake risk assessments in accordance with the Hospitals policies, procedures and standards and national regulations
- To ensure the unit meets CQC standards
- To ensure the standard of documentation is in line with the Hospitals policies, procedures and protocols
- To maintain own professional registration
- To ensure compliance with mandatory and professional training
- Participate in personal development planning and access training as appropriate or deemed as requirement for the management role
- To lead on the expansion and development of services.
- To attend and actively participate in the relevant committees in the Hospital.
CLINICAL
- Manage the defined specialty and ensure staff carrying out procedures appropriately trained to do so
- Develop, assess, plan, implement and evaluate programs of care in partnership with the multidisciplinary team
- Deliver governance standards in line with the Hospital’s Governance framework
- Respond to enquiries from relatives and careers, deal with concerns and actively problem solve to improve the patients experience
- Audit quality of care to improve service and ensure standards maintained and to be involved in audit capture of raw data and reporting
- Ensure incidents reported on the day it occurred.
- Participate in incident investigations, including requesting statements and providing timelines where appropriate
- Developing action plans, as well as implementing/embedding changes as a result thereof
- Manage clinical specialty and take charge of the department in the absence of the Manager and Deputy Manager and the deployment of perioperative staff ensuring the correct skill mix to meet the needs of the service
- Exhibiting best practice standards at all times and be a role model for the team
- Delivery of a high level of anaesthetic care for patients within the Theatre
- Working with the Recovery and Enhanced Care team to deliver high quality, safe patient care
- Active member of the emergency response team
- Participation in the on-call rota
- Participate in education, training and development of other staff
- Ensure all equipment is checked prior to use and any faults reported immediately
- Help to prevent cross infection by observing departmental policy regarding dress, the maintenance of a clean working environment and exhibiting a high level of skill and knowledge to carry out effective infection control practice
- Provide initial urgent or emergency care as required
- Ensure accurate and contemporaneous documentation of care and adhering to local policy.
- To ensure confidentiality at all times, only releasing confidential information obtained during the course of employment to those acting in an official capacity in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act and its amendments
- Maintain the safe custody, handling of drugs in accordance with hospital policy
- Maintaining awareness of current clinical standards and national guidelines for safe and effective patient care
- Ensure a commitment to improve existing skills within the post-operative environment.
Professional
- Provide and receive routine information using tact or persuasive skills with patients or clients as necessary
- Maintain accurate and up to date documentation
- Coordinates the clinical/managerial issues of the operating department on a day-to-day basis and deputises for the Deputy and Head of Theatres when necessary
- Demonstrates a high level of interpersonal skills, facilitate dealing with complex, sensitive, and often contentious issues
- Make judgments and decisions involving complex facts or situations, which require the analysis, interpretation, and comparison of a range of options
- Responsible for policy updates and service development in the department
- Follow policies and SOPs. Advocates these policies and teaches them to staff.
Communication
- Report to Head of Theatres and/or Deputy Head of Theatres any improvements that may affect clinical or clerical procedures of service provision
- Ensure effective communication maintained between staff, Senior Managers, Directorates, patients, and other stakeholders on all issues influencing upon theatre and post operative performance
- Liaise with medical colleagues, as the services require maximising the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of running of the department
- Act as one of the hospital’s experts/clinical advisors on all matters pertaining to or affecting the provision of the theatres service across the Hospital
- Communicate with all departments to ensure smooth running of operating lists
Risk & Clinical Governance
- To evaluate/develop Policies and Procedures and Standard Operating Procedures in line with NICE guidance, NatSSIPs, LocSSIPs, NCEPOD, RCoA and the Hospital’s policies and procedures, and educating staff to accept ownership of these.
- Ensure a working knowledge of the systems are in place for the monitoring and audit of quality standards, complaints, critical incidents, and untoward occurrences.
- Support clinical and non-clinical staff in determining root cause analyses and trend analyses of all complaints and adverse incidents.
- Assist in the management of trials of theatre equipment and consumables in collaboration with Head of Procurement.
People Management
- With the support of the HR function and line manager, monitor compliance of HR policies and procedures and take remedial action with accountable managers where non-compliance occurs.
- Line manage, coach and develop clinical and non-clinical staff, and conduct their annual performance appraisals within the specified teams.
- Ensure involvement in an effective and timely system of appraisal and personal development plans for all staff.
- Ensure all staff have realistic objectives and accept ownership and responsibility for attaining said objectives.
- Manage performance and motivation for directly line managed staff, including appraisals.
- Assist in the recruitment and retention of all staff, proactively involving all training and development needs.
- Process staff return to Work, Time of in Lieu and Annual leave requests
Financial Management
- Ensure management in deploying staff in a cost-effective way and that controls are in place to meet key workforce performance indicators on bank and agency, sickness absence reduction, turnover etc.
- Identify the need for new and replacement equipment and consumables, including equipment, which is needed but will require other funding and escalate this.
Strategy and Service Improvement
- Support Deputy Head of Theatres in identifying both new opportunities for the individual services within the department, arising from changes in the external environment or internal innovation.
- Challenge existing practices, ensuring that progressive solutions takes into account models of best practise.
- Support clinicians and staff to re-design services to deliver improved clinical outcomes for patients, reduced waiting times and efficient use of resources.
- Assist in managing service improvement projects within agreed timeframes and financial targets.
- Assist a programme of rolling replacement for key equipment.
Experience:
Essential
Educated to degree level with considerable further professional development
Strong organisational and communications skills
Demonstrable experience of driving growth
Experience of tight budgetary management including Profit and Loss accountability
Proven ability to lead a multi-functional team
Minimum of 5 years post qualification experience in operating theatre setting
Evidence of clinical reasoning skills across a varied patient case mix
Effective communicator with the ability to build professional relationships.
Evidence of continuous professional development
