The OpenAI chatbot known as ChatGPT has already been used for a wide variety of purposes, and it can be useful in recruitment too.
While it has so far been primarily used for the likes of answering general questions and creative writing, recruiters can use ChatGPT to generate outreach messages and create engaging job descriptions, as well as to automate certain repetitive tasks.
We will explain how recruiters can use ChatGPT in more detail further below, but first let’s look at exactly what ChatGPT is.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a AI chatbot model designed by AI research and deployment company OpenAI. It was launched in November of 2022 and has already built-up a wide range of uses, including many in the business world.
The AI of ChatGPT uses a language model that has been trained to produce text. The ‘GPT’ of the name stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer and the constant influx of user data enables human operators to constantly fine-tune the system's learning so that it is continuously improving.
ChatGPT has also been optimised to communicate with human-like dialogue thanks to Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF). The RLHF method uses human demonstrations and preference comparisons to guide the model’s responses and elicit the desired behaviour.
OpenAI also implemented Transfer Learning when creating ChatGPT, which means that once it has learned about one concept, it can apply the information of that concept to a new and different idea. The Transfer Learning process allows ChatGPT to understand and compound ideas to produce answers to questions in a similar way that a human would.
Functionally, ChatGPT works similarly to a search engine, with the user inputting questions or prompts and ChatGPT quickly finding the relevant data. It then presents the answer or the response to a prompt in human-like dialogue, hence the ‘Chat’ part of the name.
How Recruiters Can Use ChatGPT
One of the most beneficial aspects of this kind of AI is its potential to take care of repetitive tasks. It can generate automated email responses for every step of the recruitment process to keep candidates informed and engaged. It can answer frequently asked questions via the recruiter’s website, while also speeding up the process of searching through an applicant tracking system (ATS).
ChatGPT can also help improve the candidate experience by enhancing communication and providing instant access to information. It may even be used to remove unconscious bias when evaluating candidates, by simply using it to undertake blind evaluations of skills and experience.
As previously mentioned, ChatGPT can also be used to create engaging job descriptions, as well as for writing outreach messages to candidates. It may also be used to draft company policies that can then be fine-tuned by a legal team comprised of well trained humans.
Finally, one more use for ChatGPT in recruitment is for researching and benchmarking the very latest salary data for the various positions that need to be filled.
